DANE COUNTY (WKOW) – A Mount Horeb man has been arrested in connection with the January death of Nicholas Day.

Riley Berg, 21, was taken into custody today and faces charges of first degree intentional homicide.

Dane County Sheriff David Mahoney made the announcement at a Friday afternoon news conference.

The body of Nicholas Day, 26, was discovered Jan. 15 on County Highway JG near Bergum Road in the town of Blue Mounds.

Investigators at first thought the death was from a hit-and-run, but it later was later ruled a homicide.

The motive for the killing is still unclear, and at this point, a connection between the victim and the suspect is unknown, Mahoney said.

Investigators would like to hear from anyone who knows Berg and may has information on a connection to Nicholas Day or on Berg’s activities/behavior before and after the homicide.

Investigators can be reached through our tip line at (608) 284-6900. Deputies and detectives will continue to have a presence in the area as they follow-up on information.

Day’s body was discovered by a passerby in the early afternoon of January 15th.

An autopsy by the Dane County Medical Examiner revealed that he had suffered a gunshot wound and had sustained several lacerations to his neck.

“Nicholas was a son, a loving father and a U.S. Veteran. This is a tragic event, that will live on for some time, especially for the two families whose lives have been torn apart,” Mahoney said.
