MADISON (WKOW) -- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wants you to think smart before you hop on your snowmobile.
Officials say 14 people have died while snowmobiling in Wisconsin this season.
Six of those deaths happened this month. February is often the deadliest month for snowmobilers.
Authorities say speed and alcohol tend to be contributing factors in a majority of the cases.
The DNR wants all snowmobilers to stay on marked trails, never travel alone and make sure to always have a cell phone so you can call 911 in case of an emergency.
They also encourage you to take a safety course. You can find that information here.
