RICHLAND CENTER (WKOW) -- A Richland County veteran now has a special friend to keep him company and help him cope with life after combat, thanks to a Wisconsin organization.
There was an adoption ceremony on Sunday at the VFW in Richland Center, where James Adkins was able to take home Ruby.
Dogs2DogTags brought the two together. The organization rescues dogs and pairs them with veterans.
Adkins, an Army National Guard veteran, says he had tried to adopt dogs other places, before finding this organization.
"A little nervous, a little excited, and then when I finally met Ruby, it was like love at first sight with her. I just started playing with her, spending some time with her, and I felt immediately better," Adkins told 27 News.
Right now, the founder of Dogs2DogTags is working from his home. His goal is to expand operations to a facility, to try to bring more dogs and veterans together.
"Whenever you can, support your veterans, in any way possible. If it's not us, support anybody else that has to do with veterans," said Torre Willadsen, founder and president.
