MADISON (WKOW) -- From the day it opened its doors in 1967, The Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison has hosted many of the area's major events.

Video from the 27 News archive shows the ribbon cutting in 1967 of the brand new facility.

Shortly after, WKOW was part of the Home Show with a booth hosted by longtime broadcasting pioneer John Schermerhorn.

Schermerhorn first worked for WKOW radio beginning in 1948, then returned after a stint in the Army to help sign WKOW-TV onto the air as its first sports director.

Many viewers will remember him as the host of “Dairyland Jubilee”, which aired Saturday nights on WKOW from 1960 to 1973.

Since then the Coliseum has hosted events such as UW Men’s Hockey, Zor Shrine Circus, World Dairy Expo, Dane County Junior Fair, The ABC National Bowling Tournament, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Tony Bennett and Duke Ellington.

Coming up in a week, the WIAA state hockey championships take over the Coliseum, with state titles for boys and girls high school hockey champions being crowned March 7.
