Fox Cities Stars edge Metro Lynx for second straight state hockey title

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Fox Cities Stars returned to familiar ice as the defending state champions. The Metro Lynx were making their first appearance at the WIAA State Tournament.

But in the end it was the Stars that claimed a second straight title with a 5-3 win over the Lynx.

The Stars Maddie Jablonski picked up where she left off in last year's title game, scoring the first goal unassisted, followed by a second Stars goal by Gwen Gillard with an assist by Mckayla Zilisch.

The Lynx fired back early in the second with a score by Sydney Reaths and assists by Grace Bonnell and Lauren Johnson bring the score to 2-1.

A power -play score by Annika Horman with assists from Gwen Gillard and Hannah Hiltunen gave the Stars a 3-1 lead.

That was followed by a second power-play goal from Alaina Schauf with an assit by Mckayla Zilisch to push the Stars to 4-1.

But the Lynx came roaring back with a score by Claire Wischhoff and assist from Lauren Johnson at the end of the second.

A Lynx score by Mia Goetzke early in the third with assists by Sydney Reaths and Ally Jacobsen pulled the Lynx to 4-3.

But they would get no closer.

Annika Horman closed out the scoring for the Stars, with assists from Izze Murphy and Kourtney Koster

In the girls semifinals, the Lynx defeated the Rock County Fury to advance to the championship game.

The Lynx scored three times in the first period to take command of the game. The Fury scored first in the second period, but the Lynx score just before the second intermission to boost its lead back to three goals at 4-1.

The Stars, (18-7), the second seed advanced to the championship game with a 4-2 win over Hudson in the semifinals.

The later part of the first period was a scoring frenzy. The Stars scored a pair of goals to open the scoring within 1:11 of each other, but Hudson answer with a goal to cut the Xavier Co-op lead to 2-1 with just over a minute to play in the period. However, the Stars added a goal with 31 seconds remaining in the first period to build a 3-1 advantage.
