MIDDLETON (WKOW) -- The Middleton girls basketball team has been thinking about their loss in the WIAA Division 1 State Championship for a full year. The sting of the 50-49 loss to Bay Port fueling them through every workout.

"Last year just made us more determined," says senior Karina Bursac. "Every time I went into open gym, I thought about getting up earlier so I could be a better free throw shooter. Just thinking about we lost by one last year."

Middleton's 61-58 win over Madison Memorial in the sectional final means the Cardinals will get another shot at a championship. Middleton returns to the state tournament for the third time in four years. Last year's runner-up finish was the fourth in school history. It's still a bitter taste for a group that returns most of that core from last year.

""Definitely, we always had it in the back of our minds to get back to state after our loss last year. So, we've been really looking for that end goal, which finally we got there," says senior Sitori Tanin.

The Cardinals will face Oconomowoc in the semifinals on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. You will be able to watch all of the WIAA Girls State Basketball Tournament on WKOW.
