MADISON (WKOW)-- The Northside Planning Council & FEED Kitchens are partnering with the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County and Selfless Ambition to provide meals for the most vulnerable residents during this time of voluntary quarantine.
All of the meals are made at FEED Kitchens. They started with 40 meals on Thursday and hope to get up to 160 meals daily by next week.
"I think one of the really exciting parts about this project is not just that we are feeding people and helping local businesses, these are also entrepreneurs of color who make cuisines from all over the world," Northside Planning Council Executive Director Abha Thakkar said.
"As we're able to expand the program and bring in more businesses, we'll be able to offer a wider variety of cuisines for people and be able to meet those needs in really specific ways."
Volunteers then take this food to neighbors in need. The sites currently set up include the Boys and Girls Clubs of Dane County, the McKenzie Family Boys and Girls Club in Sun Prairie, Kennedy Heights Community Center on the Northside of Madison, and a fourth site to be determined.
FEED To Go is hoping to expand from there.
"Michael Johnson with Boys and Girls Clubs has been really generous and really open with wanting this to serve all the community centers in the city," Thakkar added. "Making sure that the people who really need these meals get them no matter where they are."
The local non-profits are able to provide a feeling of relief in a time of uncertainty.
"I think for all of us, everyone is fighting against that sense of helplessness, right," Thakkar said. "For us, we know what assets we have as an organization, we know our resources, we know our relationships, so to be able to mobilize that, and to actually reach the people who need it, that's why we exist."
Ways to support FEED To Go:
- Cash donations are the most helpful and make it possible to buy food in bulk to save resources. Donate to the Dane County COVID-19 Community Emergency Fund and mention “FEED To Go” as the project you want to support. Link: bit.ly/BGClubCovid19Fund
- Contact email@example.com to donate bulk ingredients for meal preparation.
- Volunteers will be needed to pick up meals at FEED Kitchens and drop them off at Dane County community centers. We will not be using volunteers for meal preparation and packaging in order to ensure food safety and minimize community spread. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you are an insured driver with a vehicle and would like to volunteer.
