MADISON (WKOW) -- The coronavirus pandemic is putting graduation ceremonies across the country on hold, but it's not stopping UW-Madison medical school graduates from celebrating a special tradition.
The 2020 graduating class at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health learned last week that their match day was going to be canceled because of COVID-19. Match Day is the day the graduates find out where they will spend their medical residencies and fellowships.
The graduates worked together with faculty and staff to hold Match Day online - keeping the tradition alive.
"This is definitely different than what we had anticipated for the last four years of our lives, but this was just as special," said graduate Tenzin Atruktsang. "We had our families and friends still participating - not in the same way that typically would happen - but they were still there. That's what really matters."
Out of the 161 medical school graduates, 75 celebrated the virtual Match Day.
