(WKOW) -- The Ho-Chunk Nation is beginning to layoff nonessential employees effective April 3.

The announcement came Thursday in a letter from President Marlon WhiteEagle.

"The Nation has gone from exploring to executing temporary layoffs of non-essential employees," WhiteEagle wrote. "Layoffs will be effective April 3, 2020 with the goal of preserving our capital and maintaining operations.

WhiteEagle did not specify how many employees would be affected.

The layoffs, according to the letter, are due to the "impacts of preventing the spread of the [coronavirus]."
