Getting answers: How do I keep my groceries safe from COVID-19?

Remaining Ad Time Ad - 00:00

(CNN) -- The White House is warning Americans to avoid places like the grocery store as much as possible during the the next two weeks as the coronavirus pandemic could peak nationwide.

But if you have to go to the store, there are things you can do to make sure you're not bringing the virus home with you.

Studies have shown the virus can survive on some surfaces. So, wiping down cans, glass containers or cardboard boses of food with disinfectant wipes can't hurt.

Wash produce with water as you normally would.

And throw away the used grocery bags and clean any surface touched by the groceries or grocery bags.

And -- as always -- make sure you wash your hands.
