MADISON (WKOW) -- As business owners struggle to stay afloat right now, a new brewery is getting started in the middle of the pandemic.
Young Blood Beer Company opened Friday on King Street in downtown Madison.
The team had been planning the new brewery for about a year and decided they didn't want to put off opening, even though it's been a tough time for the industry.
"People are looking for some things to grab on to and it would be nice to give people some hope that there is still stuff happening," said co-founder Tom Dufek. "Life is still going on, we want to be safe and we want to do things smart, so we've got a whole bunch of procedures in place to keep people safe but we really wanted to open up just to provide a little ray of sunshine."
The brewery is making sure employees are safe by taking their temperatures, requiring them to report any symptoms and stay home if they're sick. They're also wearing masks and regularly cleaning.
"As a team, we're really just trying to stay positive, keep everybody safe, keep everybody healthy, but it's been good," Dufek told 27 News. "I think we've got a good crew here, too, so everybody's been really positive and upbeat."
So far, the community's response has been good. Young Blood sold out of beer within an hour of pre-orders. They're making more for next week.
The brewery had planned to sell all tap beer, but decided to start canning to get products out to customers while the tap room is closed.
