UPDATE: Officer charged with third-degree murder in death of George Floyd

UPDATE (WKOW) -- Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman today said that former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been arrested and charged with third-degree murder.


MINNEAPOLIS -- Department of Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington announced the arresting officer in the George Floyd case has been taken into custody, according to ABC affiliate KSTP in Minneapolis.

Former officer Derek Chauvin has been taken into custody by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Floyd was pronounced dead Monday night after he was taken into custody by police in south Minneapolis. A video that was circulated online shows an officer holding his knee on the back of Floyd's neck for several minutes.

A source with knowledge of the investigation identified the officer as Derek Chauvin. Chauvin and three other officers have been fired in connection to the incident.
