MADISON (WKOW) -- More than 28,000 peaches are now in the hands or bellies of people in the Madison area for free.
The Hy-Vee stores in Fitchburg and the east and west side of Madison gave them away Wednesday morning during a contactless, drive-thru event.
The grocery store wanted to put on the event because workers know coronavirus is still impacting people across the area.
"We just wanted to thank all of our customers. We really appreciate your business shopping with us during these tough times," said Jim Banasik, the store director at the Madison west location. "Money is tight right now for our customers, so we thought it would be nice to do something nice for the community."
In total, 8,000 pounds of fresh produce were given away.
Hy-Vee partnered with Sunwest Fruit Company to make the event possible.
