UPDATE (WKOW) -- Gary W. Dickson, 37 of Reedsburg, faces two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide after at Sauk County Circuit Court Judge signed a probably cause statement.

Additional charges of two counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon, burglary while armed to an occupied dwelling, theft of a firearm and felony bail jumping will be referred to the Sauk County District Attorney’s Office within the coming days, according to a news release from the Sauk County Sheriff's Office.

SAUK COUNTY (WKOW) -- A 37-year-old man is in critical condition after authorities say he shot his way into his parent's home and was hit when they returned fire.

The Sauk County Communications Center received a 911 call about 3:45 a.m. Monday from a home in the village of North Freedom.

The caller was reporting that someone was shooting at their home. While dispatchers were getting more information, the caller said that the person had gotten into their home and gunfire was exchanged between the two.

Deputies arrived and found numerous windows shot out of the home. The suspect had shot his way through a patio door to gain entry. Deputies found the suspect on the ground suffering from numerous gunshot wounds. Deputies also located the two residents of the home inside and they were not injured.

Investigators say the 37-year-old son of the woman who lived at the home arrived and started shooting the windows out of the home in an attempt to get inside.

The mother and her husband retreated to the basement of the home as the son made entry.

The son fired numerous rounds inside the home and stopped to reload. As the son proceeded down a hallway to the basement, one of the residents, now armed with a firearm, fired back at the suspect striking him several times.

The son was transported to UW Hospital in Madison by Med-Flight Helicopter for treatment of his injuries. He remains in critical condition.

Neighbor Brittany Spaude says she's often seen the son assisting his mother and stepfather with yard work at the home. But she also says the couple are kind people. "They go out of their way to help," Spaude says. "They don't go out of their way to put themselves in a position where they need to fend for themselves in their own home," she says.

"That's a pretty horrific situation, terrible situation," neighbor Dan Baumgarten says of the violence between family members.

Online court records show had a scheduled, Sauk County court hearing Monday, just a few hours after authorities say he shot his way into the home and was wounded. Records show he was scheduled to enter a plea of not contest or guilty in a domestic violence case involving two felony crimes, including suffocation. He had been free on a signature bond since being charged in January. Court notes show he had been barred from contact with a person whose initials are different from those of his mother and stepfather.

The son's attorney, Peter Masana has yet to comment to 27 News about whether the terms of the scheduled plea agreement and sentencing Monday would have involved the man surrendering to authorities to begin a jail term.

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Reedsburg Police, Wisconsin State Patrol, North Freedom Fire and First Responders, Reedsburg Ambulance, and the Sauk County District Attorney’s Office.

This incident remains under investigation.
