WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- The Washington Redskins, the U.S. capital's local football team, announced Friday it would "undergo a thorough review" of its name.
The announcement came in a press release shared by various sports reporters, such as ESPN's Adam Schefter.
"This process allows the team to take into account not only the proud tradition and history of this franchise but also input from our alumni, the organization, sponsors, the National Football League and the local community it is proud to represent on and off the field," said Dan Snyder, the team's owner.
The team cited "recent events" in the United States as reasoning for the review.
"This issue is of personal importance to me and I look forward to working closely with Dan Snyder to make sure we continue the mission of honoring and supporting Native Americans and our Military," Ron Rivera, the team's head coach, said.
