GRANT COUNTY (WKOW) -- A horse pulling an Amish buggy near Fennimore over the weekend collapsed and died in the heat, according to the Grant County Sheriff.

According to a news release, the sheriff's office was called about noon on Saturday about a horse that had just collapsed while pulling an Amish buggy in the middle of the eastbound lane of Hwy 18, just east of the city limits of Fennimore.

When the Grant County Sheriff's deputies, along with the Fennimore police, arrived, they found the horse had collapsed due to heat.

It had been pulling a buggy carrying three people, according to the news release.

First responders put several gallons of water on the horse in an attempt to cool it and save its life.
