WAUNAKEE (WKOW) -- The Waunakee School Board on Monday approved a plan to play a conference-only football schedule and delay the start of football practice to Aug. 17.
"Limiting the season to Badger Conference schools gives our coaches and administrators greater flexibility to respond to recommendations from PHMDC," Aaron May, activities director at Waunakee High School said in a statement.
The school board also is reviewing Waunakee's other fall sports schedules and how the district can provide those sports opportunities while following the regulations from Public Health Madison Dane County, according to the statement.
"What they are going to be looking at is our other fall sports," said May.
"What those look like under the options of the Forward Dane Plan. Just trying to get a handle and an understanding of what those sports will look like this fall."
The Big Eight Conference is also entering decision mode. Coaches from the conference put together a proposal on Sunday for the athletic directors of the conference, calling for a similar plan that Waunakee approved.
"There is no need to make a decision right now. We are going to do our best to hold out to make the best informed decision to safely have athletics," said Jeremy Schlitz who doubles as Madison Memorial's athletic director and secretary for the Big Eight athletic directors who ultimately have the final say.
"I think a lot of it needs to parallel the decisions we make around what schooling will look like," said Schlitz.
This proposal will be discussed at the Big Eight athletic directors' virtual meeting July 21.
