MADISON (WKOW) -- The WIAA Board of Control voted Thursday to set start dates for Fall high school sports in August and September.

Girls golf, tennis and swimming will begin Aug. 17, along with both boys and girls cross country. These sports are deemed "low risk."

Football, volleyball, and soccer seasons will begin Sept. 7. These sports are deemed "high risk." The board voted 8-3 in support of the dates.

For high school football, the teams will practice for two weeks, and the first games will be until Sept. 24-25. It will be a six-week regular season with three weeks of playoffs.

WIAA will provide a spring alternative season for schools that are unable to participate in fall sports.

The decision followed hours of debate at Thursday's 9 a.m. meeting.

The Big 8 Conference voted unanimously on Tuesday to not hold conference competitions in the fall.
