OAK CREEK (WKOW) -- The mother of a Wisconsin Marine who is missing and presumed dead says he knew from an early age he wanted to join the Marine Corps.

19-year-old Evan Bath of Oak Creek was on an amphibious assault vehicle when it sank off the coast of southern California last week.

Bath's mom tells WISN he grew up wanting to be a Marine, so he could fight for people who couldn't.

She says he never liked the attention he got from people when he was in uniform.

"They tend to say 'Thank you for your service.' It made him very uncomfortable and he did not like it. 'Mom, I haven't done anything to earn it.' He's a hero. He earned it," said Aleta Bath.

Bath joined the Marines in July of last year.
