MADISON (WKOW) -- Outside the Wisconsin State Capitol Thursday, healthcare workers gathered in support of Governor Tony Evers' mask order.

They said they're upset some Republican lawmakers are threatening to challenge it.

"The science is clear. Masks are one of the best ways that we can keep the virus from spreading through our communities," said Kate Walden, a nurse at University Hospital's emergency department.

"Republicans need to get their priorities straight," Tracy Price, a retired nurse, echoed. "We are in the midst of a public health crisis. They need to take action to protect frontline workers, the unemployed and the residents of Wisconsin."

These same healthcare workers have been pushing for the Healthcare Heroes Act to be passed. It would provide healthcare workers in Wisconsin paid sick leave, hazard pay and cover all the costs of their COVID-19 related healthcare needs.
