17-year-old drowns in Grant River

WATERLOO TOWNSHIP (WKOW) -- Authorities say a 17-year-old drown on Saturday after diving headfirst into Grant River.

According to the Grant County Sheriff's Office, they received a call around 2:41 p.m. regarding a 17-year-old who dove off of a bank on the Grant River and did not resurface.

Multiple emergency agencies responded to the scene, which was an area on the Grant River along Pigeon River Road in the Waterloo Township, to attempt to locate Lynn Zimmerman, 17, of Livingston.

Officials say about one hour after the initial call, emergency crews located Zimmerman on the bottom of the river in the same location that he had gone under the water.

Zimmerman was declared deceased at the scene.

The Grant County Sheriff's Office said Zimmerman was with a group of 12 friends and family, who were canoeing the Grant River when they stopped to go swimming.

Witnesses say that Zimmerman dove, headfirst, into the water from the bank. After a couple of seconds or so, he resurfaced and then immediately sank back under the water. He did not resurface again.

The Grant County Sheriff's Office is conducting the investigation into the incident.

Cassville Fire and EMS Departments, Bloomington Fire Department, West Grant EMS, Glen Haven First Responders, Bagley Fire and First Responders, Grant County Emergency Management, and members of the Southwest Wisconsin Technical Rescue Team's swift water rescue team all responded to the call.
