MADISON (WKOW) -- Becoming a parent for the first time is stressful for anyone. The pressure of the COVID-19 pandemic makes it even for challenging.

Local health experts suggest finding ways to socialize, like hosting a Zoom or Skype call, so your friends and family can see your child without the risk of doing it in person.

"The advice I've been giving new parents is that it really is a matter of weighing risks and benefits so there are some visitors that are going to be really important family members, grandmas," said Elizabeth Goetz, MD and Nursery Specialist at UnityPoint Health. "A lot of parents are needing help with other children in their home and requiring other family members to come in to help provide childcare."

You should also schedule some personal time for yourself, even if it's just to go for a walk or watch your favorite TV show. New parents are encouraged to join "Mother Baby Hour, a free virtual support group that gives moms a chance with each other.
