Wisconsin volleyball focused on season start on Friday

The middle of January doesn't exactly scream volleyball season, but the Badgers will kickoff their 2020-21 season on Friday at home against Purdue.

The last time the Badgers played in a regular season match was in the national title game on December 21, 2019 in a 3-0 loss to Stanford.

A lot has happened since then, or lack thereof. The Badgers didn't play in the fall. Instead, Wisconsin, the Big Ten and NCAA adjusted the 2020 season to a winter-spring set-up. Wisconsin will play a conference only schedule that runs January 22 - April 2.

"One of the really good thing is, we've got is a really experienced team, and a really experienced staff," said Wisconsin head coach Kelly Sheffield.

The Badgers enter this season as preseason ranked No. 1. They return a majority of their national tournament team from a year ago.

"It's been almost in a weird sense, business as usual. Let's get in the gym and lets get work done," said Sheffield.

Wisconsin will open Friday night against No. 13 Purdue. Their schedule currently has 22 matches, and they will play each opponent twice in the same week.

"You're making adjustments from one night to the next playing the same opponent," Said Sheffield. "Which, I think that is exciting. I don't know if this is something we will do moving forward, but for a one year basis."

No. 1 Wisconsin will open a two match series against #13 Purdue this Friday and Saturday at the UW Field House. Friday's match is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
