(WKOW)-- Officials at Underdog Pet Rescue in Madison say that a Facebook scammer is posing as a company employee in order to take money from families looking to adopt dogs in the Eau Claire area.

First, the scammer posts pictures of dogs that they claim are up for adoption in online pet rehoming groups.

The scammer then asks for a deposit to hold onto the dog before the adoption, and requests the buyers to drive to Madison to pick them up.

When the buyer arrives and tries to contact the seller, the seller never responds.

Lauren Wojtosiak, the founder of Underdog Pet Rescue, says the center never takes deposits before an application or meeting has been completed.

"It just makes me really sad that this happened to people who were trying to do a good thing and take a dog from a rescue," she said.

None of the pets posted in the scammers profile are under the care of Underdog Pet Rescue.
