UPDATE (WKOW) -- At least 42 animals have now been found in the hoarding home in Jefferson.

The Humane Society of Jefferson County rescued 41 cats and one dog from the home. The Humane Society is now taking care of the animals.

Officials say they believe the two-year-old dog had never been out of the home's basement.

They hope the dog and the cats will be up for adoption in the next few weeks.

The home has been condemned. Police are investigating.


JEFFERSON COUNTY (WKOW) -- The Humane Society of Jefferson County says it helped rescue dozens of animals from a hoarding home in Jefferson.

At least 38 cats and one dog were rescued.

The animals will be medically evaluated.

They're expected to be placed up for adoption in the next few weeks.

The home where the animals were kept was later condemned by the Jefferson County Health Department and a police investigation is ongoing.

Shelter staff reported that in some places, the piles of filth, junk, and animal waste were nearly knee-high.
