MADISON (WKOW) -- Four people are without a home following a basement fire in Madison Monday morning, according to the Madison Fire Department.

MFD said they were called around 8:30 a.m. to a duplex in the 1400 block of Theresa Terrace. The caller said there was smoke in the home and everyone inside was able to get out safely.

Fire crews arrived to the duplex and found a fire in the basement. They were able to put it out quickly, but MFD said the flames caused extensive damage to the structure.

All four residents and their pets are unable to stay at the home. The people in the neighboring duplex were able to return home.

The American Red Cross is helping those who were displaced.

The investigation into what caused the fire is ongoing.
