WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- President Joe Biden has announced that he is proposing a shift in U.S. vaccination policy and directing states to prioritize educators.

Biden declared the shift in a post on Twitter Tuesday.

"Today, I am directing every state to prioritize educators for vaccination. We want every educator, school staff member, and child-care worker to receive at least one shot by the end of this month," he wrote. "It’s time to treat in-person learning like the essential service that it is."

Teachers' unions, like the local Madison Teachers Inc., have pushed for slower reopening timelines saying they are worried about the safety of their members.

Biden's move appeared to be designed to placate the unions while also bolstering his prior commitment to reopening schools.
