MADISON (WKOW) -- UW Health reported Thursday of its efforts to keep vaccine equity top of mind when prioritizing COVID-19 shots in the 65 and older population.

Data from the health system shows the following percentages of its patients have received at least one dose of the vaccine:

  • 50% Native American patients
  • 44% Latinx patients
  • 39% Black patients
  • 35% White patients

"When our 65 plus primary care home to patients qualified for vaccine, for example, we made sure that our black Latin x and Native American 65 plus patients received their invitation to schedule their vaccine. In the first round of invitation," said Shiva Bidar-Sielaff, UW Health's chief diversity officer.

Health experts said they have seen higher COVID-19 hospitalization rates and death rates in people of color.
