WINDSOR (WKOW) — The Dane County Sheriff's Office is searching the pond at the Halderson family home in Windsor with K9's, DNR and a dive team.

The day long search is coupled with the draining of the pond to a five foot depth. The pond is twelve feet deep at points.

Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett says the investigation into the disappearance earlier this month of Krista Halderson, 53, and the killing of her husband, Bart, 50, revealed information that led to the pond. Barrett says a Madison Police cadaver dog made a hit on a section of the pond, prompting divers with a support boat to comb the waters.

The couple's son, Chandler Halderson, 23, was arrested July 8 and has been charged in connection with his father's homicide. Authorities say Bart Halderson's dismembered remains were found on a remote property in the Town of Cottage Grove.

At times Thursday, divers and their crew appeared to remove material from the pond water. But it was unclear what was retrieved. Barrett has made no comment as to whether any evidence has been found, or any clues as to the whereabouts of Krista Halderson.

Last week, Barrett stated he believed Halderson may still alive. That sentiment was absent from his remarks Thursday.

"We're just following all the leads from the investigation and letting that take us where we need to be in regards to her whereabouts, in regards to this investigation," Barrett says. "We are still going to collect all evidence we can, top to bottom, to investigate all ensure we do bring that peace and closure to the Halderson family."

This is one of several sites being searched, the others are the Johnson Creek landfill and the Halderson home itself.

Authorities say human remains found in the Town of Roxbury July 14 in connection with this investigation have yet be identified.

Court records of the criminal charges against Chandler Halderson lack any reference to motive for his alleged killing of his father and cover up of his mother's disappearance. A criminal complaint states Halderson said his father became angry with him over an accident in the home just before he and Halderson's mother disappeared. Halderson maintained they were travelling north to a family cabin.

This is a developing story that will be updated.
