Jefferson Award Winner, September 2018: Weston Hannan

SUN PRAIRIE (WKOW) — A little boy in Sun Prairie is working to keep bellies full and food pantry shelves stocked.

Weston Hannan, our September Jefferson Award winner, has been learning the art of farming for the past four years.

The 7-year-old became interested in the trade after seeing farmers working in the fields near his home.

One day, some of the farmers noticed Weston watching from afar and asked him if he would like to ride along as they did their work.

“The rest is history,” said April Hannan, Weston’s mom.

Weston created a friendship with Farmer Jerry Teirney. Jerry spends hours each summer with Weston, teaching him about crops, soil and the machinery needed for farming.

“It’s neat seeing young people interested in farming…You don’t see that a lot,” said Teirney.

Now, Weston farms his own plot of land. He grows corn to sell at farmers markets and during an event called “Harvest in the Gardens.”

“We pick lots of corn and then we have this big party and it’s a lot of fun,” said Weston. “And we raise a lot of money for people in need.”

Weston and his family raised $15,000 to donate to the Sunshine Place and the DeForest Food Pantry this year.

“I think it’s taught Weston a lot about commitment and follow through and it’s just been a great learning experience,” said Weston’s dad, Dan Hannan.

Weston wants to be a farmer when he grows up. For now, he says he’ll keep learning from Jerry.
