On July 13th and 14th, over 500 artists will have their work displayed around Capitol Square. As a long standing summer tradition and one of the most popular festivals in the Midwest, Art Fair on the Square has been known to draw nearly 200,000 people to Madison. Annik Dupaty, Madison Museum of Contemporary Arts director of events and volunteers and Alan Kalker, an artist participating in this year’s fair, joined us to talk about what makes this year special.

“Every year we have amazing returning artists, but there’s always someone new to the fair, especially on the ‘Emerge’ block,” Dupaty said. “We have artists that are exhibiting their work for the first time at Art Fair on the Square and in some cases, the first fair they’ve ever done.”

Alan Kalker has been involved in Art Fair on the Square for several years. He brought several woodwork pieces in to the studio, including a music stand he said took nearly 200 hours to complete from start to finish.
