The BBB Wisconsin provides a range of services and resources designed to assist consumers and help establish and maintain confidence in the Wisconsin marketplace. But, you may not be familiar with exactly what resources are available to you. Tiffany Schultz, BBB southwest WI regional director, joined us in the studio to give us the scoop.

From the BBB:

BBB Accreditation – BBB accreditation is an honor, and not every business is eligible. Businesses that meet our high standards are invited to seek BBB accreditation, and must live up to our Standards of Trust.

When you’re looking to use a business, whether it’s hiring a contractor to perform work inside your home such as a plumber, roofer, etc., or if you’re shopping at an online retailer, we encourage you to look for those businesses who are BBB accredited, and have pledged trust in the marketplace.

Find accredited businesses at BBB.org. Simply search the name of the business or a category, such as plumbing, and you’ll see business profiles from accredited and non-accredited businesses. The profiles provide free, unbiased information on businesses such as rating, customer reviews, complaints and more.

Consumer news & tips – BBB educates consumers, businesses and the media through tips, warnings and alerts. Our website and social media channels share the latest news and information. Consumers can sign up to receive our newsletter at bbb.org/Wisconsin.

If you’re part of a group such as a senior group, business, school, trade association, etc., we also offer free presentations from our speaker’s bureau. We can talk about topics such as being a smart consumer and avoiding scams, BBB Resources, Business ethics, and so much more. If you’re interested in learning more, please reach out to me directly.

BBB Scam Tracker – This is our interactive tool in our fight against scams and fraud. BBB ScamTracker collects information from consumers on scams, and displays trends in real time, online. If you’ve been a victim of a scam, or have been approached by a scam, we encourage you to report it to Scam Tracker at BBB.org/ScamTracker. The information you provide us helps us warn other consumers about scams in the marketplace. We also have a full-time investigator on our staff who digs deeper into these scams and helps get scammers shut down.

Dispute Resolution – BBB provides dispute resolution services to help resolve complaints between customers and businesses. Informal and biased, the dispute process is an alternative to going to court, and our services are completely free.

Ad Review – BBB sets standards and evaluates advertisements to ensure people can trust what’s said. Through these efforts, we help consumers understand what advertising may be deceptive. Consumers can report any type of ad that may seem confusing or misleading to AdTruth at BBB.org/Ad-Truth. We’ll take it from there, review it and work with the advertiser to improve their advertising if we determine a violation.

Scholarship – BBB Serving Wisconsin Foundation awards Wisconsin high school students who have demonstrated character, ethics and leadership values through our Students of Integrity Scholarship Awards. High school seniors planning to attend a 2 or 4 year college or university in Wisconsin next fall can apply online starting October 1, 2019. We award 10 – $2,500 scholarships through this endeavor.
