MADISON (WKOW) — A Madison Lutheran church is offering to help an historic Milwaukee church that was consumed by a large fire Tuesday.
The fire hits home for Mount Olive Lutheran Church Pastor Jason Zobel, who knows people who call Milwaukee’s oldest Lutheran church home.
"I’ve been in that church a few times over the years," said Rev. Zobel. "I look at that [fire] and just see the struggles that they’ll be going through."
Rev. Zobel says he’ll have a special offering during Sunday’s service and will donate that money directly to help the Milwaukee church.
"We thought it’s the least we can do to reach out to them and offer up some assistance," Rev. Zobel, who plans to sit down with church staff to discuss a certain amount they’d like to collect. "If the special offering comes in a little under that, then as a congregation we’ll add to that."
Rev. Zobel says it’s because he knows how much the fire sets back a congregation that dates back to German immigrants who built the church in 1847.
"You have families who were baptized, confirmed, married, family members whose funerals were in that church," said Rev. Zobel. "We’re supposed to be here for each other and as a church that’s what we do."
Rev. Zobel says if they’re asked to send extra help or resources to Milwaukee in the coming weeks, he plans to do so.
