Beloit police lieutenant to oversee state school safety office

MADISON (WKOW) — A Beloit police lieutenant will now oversee the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Office of School Safety.

Lt. Kristen Devitt was appointed to the position of director on Monday. She oversees school resources officers in Beloit. She’s also worked in police/child welfare training and is a part-time instructor for the National Association of School Resource Officers.

“Lieutenant Devitt is the ideal candidate to lead the Office of School Safety,” said Attorney General Schimel in a statement. “It’s very clear, from Devitt’s background and experience, that she will be able to successfully administer the school safety grant program, as well as provide her extensive knowledge of school safety to local law enforcement and school districts as they make our schools the safest in the nation.”

Devitt has been a police officer since 1999, where she started at the LaSalle, Illinois Police Department. She also worked at Madison Police Department and Blackhawk Technical College, before joining Beloit Police Department.

Devitt will take over her new role starting Monday, June 9.
