Local Jefferson Award winner honored at national gala in Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKOW) — A local Jefferson Award Winner was honored Thursday at the national gala in Washington, D.C.

Jen Roman is a captain for the Madison Fire Department and she had to overcome a lot of barriers to get there.

She says nationwide women only make up 3.5% of the firefighter force.

That’s why she started CampHERO, to make sure women have access to careers in protective services.

"We give them an ax and watch their confidence soar as they swing it. We watch them find the courage to crawl into a dark tunnel to save a victim. And most importantly, we surround them with mentors of great character and help them realize their own," she says.

Jen was recognized in D.C. Thursday along with volunteers from all over the country for the work they do in their communities.
