$500k grant for redevelopment of former Oscar Mayer site

MADISON (WKOW) — State and local officials announced redevelopment plans for the former Oscar Mayer plant site on Wednesday.

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation is awarding the city with a $500,000 grant to help boost the redevelopment. The Idle Sites Redevelopment grant will help the city make the plant site compatible for other businesses.

"We are thrilled for people who are going to be involved in this site and the further development and the city of Madison knowing what an economic development hub this if for a state that is absolutely on a tear right now," said Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch.

Madison Mayor Paul Soglin said Tuesday he expects the entire project to cost $1.8 million.

"The state’s cooperation in providing us $500,000 to help offset the cost of the relocation and modernizing the utility coming into the site is going to make a big difference in accelerating the success of the project," Soglin said.

Work is expected to begin this summer.
