Mahlon Mitchell denies using racial slur in Facebook live video

MADISON (WKOW) — Democratic candidate for governor Mahlon Mitchell is denying that he used a racial slur while joking with employees at a brewery as part of his tour for governor. Mitchell, who is African American, was visiting Hop & Barrel Brewing Company in Hudson earlier this month and posted a video on his Facebook page. Nearing the end of the video, Mitchell appears to use the “N” word.

"You’re the cumma sum laude, I’d say. You’re the head ..N…I can’t say that," said Mitchell.

During an interview with WISN, Mitchell denied using that word and said he thought he was saying “head man in charge.”

Mitchell also clarified that he never uses that word, not even allowing his children to. The Republican Party of Wisconsin called out Mitchell for repeatedly using inappropriate words during his campaign.

"These evolving excuses and blatant dishonesty are further proof that Mitchell isn’t running a serious campaign. The video footage is clear," said Alec Zimmerman, Communications Director for RPW.
