JANESVILLE (WKOW) — It’s been 10 years since the GM Janesville Assembly plant closed, and even though it was expected, it still was a shock to the community.
The decision to close the plant cost hundreds of people their jobs. Unemployment in Rock County spiked to about 13.2 percent at its highest point.
Fast forward 10 years later, the plant is being demolished and city officials say the community is still moving forward.
“There’s still going to be some that remember how it was and it takes a while to go through that in ten years is a long time, but it’s not always long enough,” said Janesville City Council President Douglas Marklein.
Thursday on 27 News at 10, we check in with the community to see if they’ve rebounded or are struggling to stay afloat. We’ll also see what’s next for the former GM plant site.
