PORTAGE (WKOW) — More than 30 rescue dogs from kill shelters in Texas are looking for a home in Wisconsin.

Alexis Schaffer is leading a mission to save as many dogs as possible from being put down.

In the past two and a half years, “Rocky and Rustys Redemption” has saved more than 400 dogs.

The group is named after Schaffer’s two dogs that died after someone poisoned them.

The rescue dogs from Texas arrived in Wisconsin today for an adoption event in Portage.

“You’re saving lives that would otherwise be euthanized in the high kill shelters,” said Foster Coordinator, Amy Erstad. “Some of them may just be put out on the street as strays, we’re just trying to save as many as we can and find them good homes.”

Only three of the dogs were adopted today, the rest are still available.

Organizers also say they always need more people to foster the dogs they rescue.
