‘Grandparent scam’ caller claims to be Madison cop

MADISON (WKOW) — A 93-year-old Madison man was scammed out of $8,500 this week after being convinced his grandson was locked up and in need of bail money, according to a Madison Police Department incident report.

The scam started when the victim got a phone call from someone pretending to be a Madison police officer.

The phony cop instructed the victim to withdraw funds from his bank account and send cash via Federal Express to an address in Miami, Florida.

The victim followed the instructions, and later realized he had been victimized.
