Madison city inspectors tackle backlog of sidewalk complaints

MADISON (WKOW) — Madison code inspectors were out Thursday checking on complaints about sidewalks that haven’t been shoveled following the snowstorm that ended Tuesday.

They started the day with 150 unique addresses to check out, according to Kyle Bunnow with the Building Inspection and Code Enforcement Department of the City of Madison.

They received roughly 80 additional complaints throughout the day.

City inspectors were able to assess about 90 locations Thursday, with roughly 1/3 of those still not clear.

The snow that started to accumulate on Monday, Feb. 11, 2019, and continued into Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019, should have been cleared from public sidewalks by noon Wednesday, February 13, 2019. Sidewalks must be completely clear of snow and ice from edge to edge.

If the sidewalk has not been cleared by the required time, the property owner will be issued a citation with a fine. The first-time fine is $124. If the sidewalk still isn’t cleared by the next day, crews will remove the snow and ice from the sidewalk. Property owners will be billed for this service, and unpaid bills will be added to the owner’s property tax, according to the city of Madison’s website.
