MADISON (WKOW) — The Diocese of Madison announced a new Bishop Thursday morning.

According to a news release, Pope Francis has named Bishop Donald J. Hying as the fifth Bishop of Madison.

This comes after the death of Bishop Robert Morlino in November.

Hying, 55, is currently the Bishop of Gary, Indiana.

Hying was born in West Allis and spent many of his early years and vocational career in the Milwaukee area.  He received a bachelor’s degree at Marquette University and a master’s degree from St. Francis Seminary.

Bishop Hying was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee in May 1989.  In May 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Hying Titular Bishop of Regiae and the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.  He was consecrated that July.  Pope Francis appointed Bishop Hying the fourth Bishop of Gary in 2014.

A news conference is expected at 10 a.m. Thursday.
