MADISON (WKOW) — UW Basketball Assistant Coach Howard Moore and his son were still recovering Sunday after a deadly crash killed his wife and daughter in Michigan.

The Moores were there visiting family during the Memorial Day weekend, when a driver going the wrong way on the highway ran into them.

“Howard is a fantastic coach,” Matt Metzger, a pastor at Blackhawk Church, said. “Howard is an even better person.”

Metzger has known the Moores for years as their pastor at Blackhawk Church.

He says the Moores are a family like no other.

“He and his wife Jen were one of the most giving people that you’re going to be around,” Metzger said.

The news of the crash shook the community.

After finding out that his friend’s wife and daughter died, Michael Johnson of the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County, knew he had to go to be with Howard.

“I just felt the pull on my heart to come be with Howard during these trying times,” Johnson said.

Both Metzgar and Johnson struggled to come to terms with this tragedy.

“I heard the news yesterday around 7 o’clock and I didn’t want to believe it,” Johnson said. “It just ripped my heart wide open.”

Now, they know that the Moores need all the help they can get.

“They need a lot from us as a community right now,” Metzger said. “He loves this city, he loves the university and he needs the prayers and support of this city, university in a way that most of us really have a hard time wrapping our minds around.”

Sunday the Moore family sent out a statement thanking everyone for the “prayers and well-wishes that have been showered upon them.”

They said Howard is in stable condition in the ICU and his son is up and walking around.

Metzger held back tears at the thought of seeing his friend again.

“I just can’t wait to hug him and tell him that I love him,” he said.
