MADISON (WKOW) — The Wisconsin Historical Society is proving that you can never start thinking about Christmas too early.
This year’s State Capitol ornament was unveiled Monday. The ornament is a tribute to the centennial celebration of the Wisconsin Women’s Suffrage movement. The decoration will feature the “Forward” statue which sits at one of the entrances to the State Capitol.
On June 10, 1919, Wisconsin became the first state to ratify the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote.
“At the dedication in 1895 is when they dedicated the Forward statue on behalf of Women’s Sufferage for all Wisconsin women at all times,” said Kate Zeuske, Wisconsin Historical Society. “So it became the perfect symbol of the ornament.”
Proceeds from ornament sales support restoration projects around the capitol building. More information about the ornaments can be found here.
