Off-duty officer killed during Racine bar shooting

UPDATE (AP) — Racine police say one of their officers has been killed while trying to stop an armed robbery at a local bar.

A statement from Police Chief Arthel Howell Tuesday says Officer John Hetland, who was off duty, was fatally shot at Teezers bar Monday about 9:40 p.m. when he intervened in the crime.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are searching for the gunman, who was masked when he entered the bar. One of the bar’s owners posted on Facebook that the suspect fired his gun and fled out the back door after a struggle.

Police officers could be seen embracing at the scene of the shooting. Hetland was a 24-year veteran of the Racine Police Department.

RACINE (WISN) — One person has died after shots were fired inside a Racine bar Monday night.

The bar, Teezers, is located at 20th Street and Lathrop Avenue.

Witnesses at the scene said a man with a mask went into the bar and shot someone. Officers were seen searching the neighborhood.

A reporter with our Milwaukee affiliate said there were more than 20 squad cars lined up at the scene and K-9s were being brought in.

Reinwald said she has seen Racine police officers hugging each other at the scene.

One of the bar’s co-owner posted this on Facebook:

Yes there was just an incident at Teezers! There was a man who walked into the bar armed and tried to rob the bar.. when confronted he wrestled with the good samaritan and got free. At which time he fired shots and ran at the back door… that is all the info I have at the this time so instead of bashing the place and talking shit let’s pray for everyone’s well being.. thanks
