Swatting incident in Madison Wednesday night

MADISON (WKOW) — The Madison Police Department says a 911 call that caused a large police response near Tree Lane Wednesday night was a “swatting incident.”

The 911 center received a call from a woman claiming to be the mother of an adult daughter. She said her daughter was in the bathroom of her condo with a gun and was threatening suicide.

Officers had nearby neighbors leave their homes or find a safe shelter.

MPD attempted many times to communicate with anyone inside the condo, including several loud verbal commands for the occupants to come outside.

The MPD was considering calling up SWAT and bringing in a crisis negotiator when the condo owner arrived home.

The condo owner told police that her adult daughter was fine and lived in a different state.

MPD was able to verify this information.

The woman said that her daughter recently broke up with someone who could be vindictive.

Officers later determined that the phone call to 911 had been placed in Texas.
