UPDATE (WKOW) — A scam that sends text messages to people in southern Wisconsin alerting them that a family member or neighbor has been hospitalized has expanded to more hospitals.
The text includes a link, but officials urge anyone that receives the text to delete it and not click on the link.
On Monday, Platteville’s Southwest hospital sent out a warning about the scam.
On Tuesday, Monroe Clinic and Upland Hill Hospital in Dodgeville also reported that people have received the texts.
The messages have a variation of, “This is Monroe hospital texting. Your neighbor is with us now. Condition is unknown. You please ring us…”
The messages have conspicuous spelling and grammar errors.
“These messages are NOT from Monroe Clinic,” the clinic posted today on its Facebook page. “We do not text customers or patients and certainly would not contact anyone about their neighbor’s health. Do not click on any links or phone numbers.”
PLATTEVILLE (WKOW) — There is a scam going around targeting families in the Platteville area.
Southwest Health in Platteville posted on Facebook on Monday that people are receiving at text message like the one pictured below. It claims that a relative is at their hospital.
Do not click on the link in the text — just delete it. Hospital officials say they would never send a text message about an ill family member.
