COLUMBIA COUNTY (WKOW) — A Columbia County sheriff’s deputy was sprayed in the face with a liquid that may have been pepper spray during an early Monday traffic stop.
The deputy stopped the vehicle shortly after midnight for speeding on Wisconsin Highway 60 at O’Conner Road in the Township of Westpoint.
When the deputy approached, the driver sprayed a liquid into the deputy’s face and eyes. The sheriff’s office says the substance was possibly an Oleoresin Capsicum, commonly called pepper spray, disabling the deputy.
The driver fled the scene.
Deputies later found the vehicle abandoned in the Westpoint subdivision of Sellwood. It had been stolen just prior to the stop, according to a news release.
The suspect was last observed walking through yards in the subdivision heading west toward Lake Wisconsin.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to help in identifying the subject.
