UPDATE (WKOW) — The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has released dashcam video of a deputy pepper sprayed Monday during a traffic stop.

The video shows the deputy approaching the door of the vehicle and talking to the driver about his speed.

Shortly after, the deputy gets sprayed in the face with a liquid and the vehicle takes off.

The deputy draws his weapon and orders the driver to stop, but instead the vehicle continues to drive off.

The deputy returns to his squad, but ends the chase shortly after.

Authorities say Joshua T. Martin, 30, is the person of interest in the incident.

He is currently listed as a missing person in Dane County, the Sheriff’s Office says. Martin was last seen in WestPoint Township, near Prairie du Sac.

The deputy stopped the vehicle shortly after midnight for speeding on Wisconsin Highway 60 at O’Conner Road in the Township of Westpoint.

The sheriff’s office says the substance was sprayed was possibly an Oleoresin Capsicum, commonly called pepper spray, disabling the deputy.

Deputies later found the vehicle abandoned in the Westpoint subdivision of Sellwood. It had been stolen just prior to the stop, according to a news release.

The suspect was last observed walking through yards in the subdivision heading west toward Lake Wisconsin.
