GREEN COUNTY (WKOW) — A man accused of mistreating animals on his Green County farm was sentenced today to 30 days in jail.

During a court hearing today, Chase Klemm pleaded no contest to intentionally mistreating animals and no contest to intentionally failing to provide food for an animal.

He was sentenced to 30 days in jail for each count, but can serve them concurrently with work release privileges.

He can also not own any type of bovine for five years as part of his sentence, according to online court records.

21 other counts were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

According to the criminal complaint filed in February, 21 dead cows were removed from Klemm’s property on County Highway E, just outside of Brodhead.

Before that, Klemm was fined after pleading no contest to intentionally mistreating animals and failing to provide food.

This most recent investigation started in August after authorities received a call from the Brodhead Bank reporting a possible animal neglect situation on Klemms’ property.

The criminal complaint says Klemm had used his cattle as collateral to secure a loan. When bank personnel checked on the welfare of the animals, they found them in horrible conditions.

The Green County Sheriff’s Office found several animals thin, malnourished and diseased.

21 animals were dead and 34 live animals were removed from the property, according to the complaint.
